SPF, YES You Need It!
The #1 cause of premature aging is ultraviolet exposure!
Noticing a little droop in your eye lid, or a little sag in your cheeks?
Wellllllll it sounds like the aging process has started. Research shows that aging typically starts in your mid to late 30's.
Growing up I was always was told that SPF was for persons of a lighter skin tone. I was also told it was only to prevent sunburn, and persons of darker skin tones didn't get burned. It wasn't until I went to esthetics school in 2018 that I learned the importance of SPF.
TOP 4 reasons to wear SPF
Cuts your chances for skin cancer in half
Drastically slows down the development of premature aging
Helps to keep your skin tone even
Protects your skin from sun related infections
Chemical VS Physical SPF
Did you know that there are two different types of sunscreen?!
Physical- works by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting the UV rays off the skin. They contain active mineral ingredients like zinc and titanium dioxide. Physical sunscreens are also known to be less irritating and a better fit for sensitive skin. They are also more moisturizing, which gives the skin a heavier feel. Its better for those with heat-activated skin i.e rosacea, and redness .Can be less protective if not re-applied every two hours. Personally I'm a physical SPF kind of girl.
Chemical- works by absorbing the UV rays into the skin and converting the rays into heat , then releasing them from the body. Active ingredients in chemical sunscreen are octinoxate, avobenzone, and oxybenzone. Less is needed to protect the skin because there is no risk of spaces between the sunscreen molecules after application. Chemical SPF can possibly cause and increase in existing brown spots and discoloration due to a higher internal skin temperature. It also requires a 20 minute window after it is applied to start working.
Main things to look for when choosing any SPF
Broad Spectrum (Protects UVA and UVB rays)
Noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores)
SPF of 30-50 (research shows that there is no added protection for SPFs higher than 50)
All in all SPF is very important for every skin tone! I wear sunscreen even when i'm in the house, because I live in the sunshine state where its ALWAYS hot!
